Op Session #2

The Chesapeake, Wheeling and Erie Railroad held its second operating session this past Saturday. A few new trains were added to the schedule and the gremlins were held at bay for the most part. But most importantly, everyone had a good time. We dispatched using track warrants, which are a little too new for my era of the mid-1970's but work really well for the current set-up. We use car card and waybills as shown in the photos below.

93-Day Inspections

Looking to add an extra bit of operation into my freelanced shortline by staging "breakdowns" which would take a unit temporarily (or permanently...?) out of service and, also, requiring periodic maintenance for all locomotives in the fleet.  I know the big Class I railroads go by a 93-day inspection rule but I can't seem to find any information about how this works.  Specifically, I would like to know if this applies to all railroads - regionals down to industrials - and, if so, do the&nbsp

Switching hidden staging yards

OK, this is partially operations and partly layout design. I am considering having a staging yard that's hidden. In fact, it would be just a foot underneath the main (visible) yard, so it cannot be realistically switched in place. As such I think it's only viable for, well, staging. How does everyone else switch the trains to make up the staged trains? Just use one of the visible yards in a non-operating session?

Jake's Abattoir gets a new siding

Was poking about on the old interweb the other day and ran across a rather informative website about how a slaughter house ships and receives freight by rail.

It made me realize that Jake's, while not a huge mainline kinda' operation definitely needed some extra trackage.

How best to "operate" this plan??....

I'm a good ways away from any sort of operation on my new HO venture but operations are on my mind anyway because I think they will have some bearing on the final configuration and theme of the railroad. I'd like to start a discussion here and hopefully get a lot of input.

New waybills inspired by Tony Thompson's article last month

Tony Thompson's article last month on creating more realistic waybills got me inspired to deal with my old waybill situation. I was having some issues with the ebb and flow of traffic on my railway and needed to create some new bills an probably remove others to adjust the traffic flow. I was not looking forward to this, but Tony's article got my juices flowing and I decided that If I'm going to mess with the waybills I might as well make mine more realistic as well.

With all the talk about Yards the last few days.  I figured I would post a few photos of the 2 main Yard areas on my layout The Gila Springs & Mesquite.

Some Big Time Progress on the 8th Sub

See what I did there?  The progress in question relates to fast clocks.  I finally made sufficient headway on the dispatcher's office to install the fast clock master module.  I'm using the Time Lynx from Rail Lynx http://rail-lynx.com/accessory_modules.htm.  Unlike the clock that's integral with my NCE DCC system, the Time Lynx is variable in tenths of a "fast" hour anywhere from 1:1 to 25:1.  It was also more cost effec

Prototypical Goose

Someone asked a few weeks back if it was prototypical for a Galloping Goose to run reverse to get back down the line. With GooseFest coming next month, I found out that one of the guys I work with will be driving a Goose around the loop at the museum.
