Signals and Train Symbols on a Shortline

As some of you may have read in the past, I am developing a fictional shortline that runs between Plainville, CT (central) and New London, CT (southeastern).  I have the route planned out (in my head) and most of the industries have been visualized and their locations along the line determined.  The next step for me is to figure out how trains will operate along the mainline.  I am modeling "current era" in HO scale.  I don't have a track plan, which I know would be helpful for all of you to vis

Easy Model Railroad Inventory Program

I have been playing around with Easy Model Railroad Inventory program by Bob Langer recently.

It also has operations included in the program. I have been using the inventory part of the program to catalog all my rail cars. It seems to work quite well. I have started to update the operations part of the program, but I am not too far into it.

Any one with any experience using this program for operations?

Sea Trials and Red Pins

I finally finished the track and wiring and had the DCC system checked out. All the shorts were gone, for now. I scheduled a small operating test session, named after MRH own M.M. "sea trials".  I had three fellow operators come over and try to give the Splitrock Mining Company a good shakedown run. My goals were simple and I hope I communicated them well.

Anybody tried interchange between different era layouts?

A friend and I came up with this idea for interchanging cars between out railroads.  It's based on the type of interchange some people have used (I don't know where it's documented) where they run an operating session and then notify the other person about what cars have been sent and what they are loaded with.  I've heard of people exchanging actual cars, but I think it usually involves duplicate cars on each layout.

Questions on types of carloads

I've chosen a few unique industries to model on my present-day layout and was looking for some information as to what loads are setout at each of them.  I have a general idea of what is required in the manufacturing/transportation of each but I was unable to find information on how a railroad would service these modern industries.

What did steam-era sawmill switchers do?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has some information on the role of switching engines dedicated to switching at sawmills, particularly during the steam era. Even after switching to logging trucks supplying the sawmills with logs, several medium-sized sawmills on Vancouver Island, BC had a dedicated switching engine to deal with the lumber loading side of the mill.
