Animated Mining Moves
EDIT: clarified step 5, where there should be no intermediate stops on the way back down.
I would like to animate a segment of my layout that is a stand-along section of track. It is the track that goes to the top of one of the crushing plants. There is a long incline, trestle and the crusher itself.
What version of Linux for JMRI?
Just a quick question. Those of you that use Linux, what version do you find works best? I have an older laptop that had a corrupted Windows 7 OS so Flattened the computer and started fresh with the sole purpose of running JMRI with it using the latest JMRI test release 3.9.5 (MRC support). I have an older desktop now running the layout using Windows XP. The USB interface for MRC needs drivers to operate and those are windows based. Is there a version of Linux that can use and or modify/emulate windows drivers to operate in Linux format?

Rethinking Staging
A layout design mantra has been staging, staging and more staging As I continue to change the railway from a freelance layout to a model of the British Columbia Railway Squamish subdivision I am rethinking this. The Squamish sub only saw 3 through freights in each direction and 2 passenger in each direction in the summer plus locals and pushers.
The north end of the modeled portion ends in the division point yard at Lillooet. Staging would be more realistic as part of the yard.
Stay tuned - for locking sliding turnout access control covers for the Richlawn RR
Many of you may be familiar with Lance Mindheim and his excellent modeling (www.lancemindheim.com). He has a number of ideas to slow things down during operations on small layouts. One of his ideas including locking covers over his turnout controls that must be unlocked in order to access the turnout controls. The idea is that it is someone prototypical (a real RR switch must be unlocked to be thrown) and will add an additional element requiring time when operating.
Condo/Loft Layout: Culvert scene and Train Operation
My ongoing blog about building a small 6' x 1' 1/2 switching layout and a 4' 1/2 staging/Interchange in a Condo in Toronto.
As we approach the Holidays and we expect guests, I want to get going on the scenery and building construction. However, the layout is light and small enough (6' x 1' 1/2) that I can pull it off the shelving support and store in the closet in lieu of my progress.

Here is a photoshopped demo of the Culvert/Pond scene i've been working on:
Building Occupancy Detection
I've got a finished building about 22" long that has two tracks running into it. Each track has wheel stops at the end. I'm thinking of some sort of detection system to light an LED on a control panel when something approaches the last few inches.
There are certainly many products out there that could do it including IR detection and DCC occupancy detection (if there was a gap in the last few inches of track.)
Middle school model RR: can lid scrap loads
Bill Brillinger’s post illustrating his list-driven car card system reminded me that one of my key objectives for the model railroad we’re building in my math classroom is to provide a visceral understanding of the circumstances that generate traffic on a transportation system.
One example is a problem that I pose for calculating car orders for empty gondolas to carry away scrap metal as a function of how many cars of sheet metal coils are delivered to a tin can fabricating facility.
Ops Session
The "Greater Nickel Plate"is all set up for today's operating session. Switch lists are made and trains spotted. All I need are 5 engineers to show up for their scheduled runs from 1300 - 1600 hrs.
