Operations
What to run?
As I proceed with building the Hudson Bay Railway Flin Flon Subdivision I have been formulating a rough operating scheme for the layout, essentially what to run on the layout to give it a purpose. Running trains “just because” is fine but I am getting more involved with local layouts that are operations based and I find that aspect of the hobby very interesting.
Ops Night - Watching My Crew Run Trains
I took some photos of the last operating session at my place. Let's see how things went...
Questions about Prototype Operation
I've recently begun dismantling my present layout and am at the same time designing a new layout plan I hope to begin construction on soon. Before doing that, one of the MRH readers (thanks Rob from Texas!) suggested that I try running some trains on my new track plan using the virtual train capabilities built into XtrackCad. What great advice that has turned out to be! You think all the bugs are ironed out in a plan, and then you start running trains on it and realize there are issues here and there you never thought about.
Does rail shape matter?
In an earlier post: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/18236?page=2, semaphore indicated that a dome shape to the top of the rail is much better than the current track rail shapes.
While the improved performance aspect is similar, shaping the rail is fundamentally different than applying graphite which is the topic of the other thread. This topic of rail shape, condition and material is one that I am intending to explore further. So, it is appropriate to start a thread on the topic.
Figuring out dispatching for a single operator layout
Hi all,
I'm working out operations for my Bradford Valley Lumber Co. layout, and there's something on which I'd like advice.
The layout, like my previous ones, is designed for one person to operate. Like my previous layouts, I'm planning to use 4-cycle waybills with car cards for car forwarding.
So you want a private phone system to communicate on your railroad
I set out to build a phone system for my layout so we could use ABS and Track Warrants on my new layout. I saw some information in the pass but not much on how or what you need to build your own phone company in your layout room.
This video I made goes over what I have found and some ideas that I looked into that start at $125 to build your own phone system that will work. I have also included below in link as to where I bought parts.
this is the link to my video:
Car cards
So, in my next step towards card cards, tonight I photographed 40 coal cars. Then I had to crop the images, rename them to the RRID and save them in a bit mapped format (specfically DBID) and then bring up Access to manually enter each dbid photo into the database record for that car.
I wish there was an easier process. (Oh and the railroad heralds are all already done and in a seperate record type referencially linked to the car records.)
