Layout tour debriefing

The layout tour for Trains 2013 in Burnaby BC is now wrapped up and the Hudson Bay Railway survived the experience.  There were about 50 people (at least who signed the guest book) that came through as part of the tour.  It was interesting to see the tour from the other side of the layout as it were, as I have been going on the tours for the past 10-12 years.

Car Cards in Yards

I am planning workspaces for my crews now and I'm wondering how other people do this...

How many card boxes for each yard track do you use?      1?   2?   3?    (incoming, outgoing, hold?)

I'm thinking of including a 4" shelf inset into the facia at my yards for working space. Is this too small? Larger than needed?

How big a working space do you give your operators?
How do you organize the car cards in your yards?

Picture please!

1st Operating Session on the Hudson Bay Railway Flin Flon Subdivision

We had our 1st "operating session" yesterday on the Hudson Bay Railway.  I was the dispatcher/station agent/ superintendent.  Crew on the Lynn Lake Mixed train was my daughter (8) and son (5) taking turns as engineer and brakeman/conductor.  My 2 year old was the local railfan who wandered away before he had a chance to run a train.  Next time around.

HOW TO BUILD A MODEL RAILROAD TIMETABLE

A while back I posted some videos on Time Table and Train Orders (TT&Os).  There were several requests that we show how to build a model railroad timetable.  Doug Matheson and I got together with Michel Boucher and he took us through the concepts/considerations and steps in building the timetable for his D&H railroad.  Due to the help of Randy I was able to post the Excel documents and a PowerPoint presentation that Michel generated.  These will be extremely useful for those getting started using this method.

N Scale Operations Video Series

For those who may be interested, a video series is being produced detailing operations on  N Scale Union Pacific Railroad Geneva Subdivision.  The first video is pretty rough, but hopefully things will get better on subsequent videos.

Pembroke II - First Operating Session

What, wait did I skip a few posts?

Yesterday, my daughter was sick, and I had to stay home to look after her. She wanted to get out the Brio trains and have a good proper play, which is exactly what we did -- for about four and a half hours! Now, ordinarily, I get bored after about an hour of playing horsie show (the trains were taking horses and their trappings to the show), but this time, I built a Brio track of Pembroke, including staging.
