Operations

Train Orders and wait times to OS

On one particular layout using timetable and train orders, I have found the ops session can get bogged down in train orders.  With train orders delivered by the dispatcher and received by the agent operator, then repeated back by each operator involved in the order (and written), engineers are waiting around with trains that can depart but don't have clearance, and even the task of OS'ing can be problematic if the train order process is long and involved.

Chris Lyon has been busy!

Wow Chris you've been busy, thanks for sharing all these layouts - and so in-depth too!

Have you considered submitting some of these to TMTV for the "My Layout" features?

Prototype rules for model railroads - what are your rules?

Based on this discussion [ http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/17270 ] I thought I'd pose the question...

What rules does your model railroad operate under?

Please don't critique other people rules, just share your rules so people can get an idea of what operation restrictions are, and what kinds of things they can adopt.

I'm not suggesting that you need to have rules, but if you want to apply any, you need to know what kind of options are out there.

Allagash Interview Discussion

There is an extensive discussion on the Allagash interview intertwined into this thread Mike Confalone video coming to TrainMasters - status update. The discussion begins about here.

In case you missed the discussion, it's quite interesting. Check it out.

In the mean time, I thought I would start a new thread to continue the discussion...

Staging and the Monday Night Mail Train

In my January entry I spoke about the trains I wished to run on the Kanunda And Emu Flat railway and what was required on the layout to sustain running those trains. This month I will talk about staging on the K&EFR.

IAIS's West End - New automated car forwarding for modern layouts - freeware

Many of us who model modern times, i.e. the era in which prototype crews have worked from computer-generated reports rather than waybills and hand-written switch lists, have long struggled with finding a way to easily deal with car forwarding and operating session setup, while still creating prototypical reports from which we and our crews can work.

Storage

In researching my current Elk Creek Railroad (based on the East Penn Railroad's Octoraro Branch) and my previous layout's Ogden River Railway, I've noticed that some modern short line operators do a considerable amount of car storage on their lines. They use little used sidings and spurs and, on occasions, even the "mainline" to store cars (presumably for their larger Class I railroads) until needed.
