The Train Room aka The Mother in law room.

The Train Room aka The mother in law room.  This room is 11.5' x 19.5' built on the back patio of the house.  The owner before me used it as an art studio.  I used it for storage at the time of the photos.  The room has no climate control and 2 doors with 2 types of windows on the East (Glass Door Sliding Door) and West (Normal Door) walls.  The north wall (Finished at this time) is a 2x4 stud wall with the back yard on the other side.  The south wall is the the house (Cinder Block wall).  You can see the slope in the ceiling fr

New guy here

Hello everyone. My name is Michael. I just joined here. Been a lurker for a while. While I can't even come close to some of you expert modelers here, I thought I'd share some of my layout photos.

This is my first real layout (since I was 7 years old with a 4x8 tyco trains).

I'm from Denver, CO. I'm 42. I started my layout about a year and a 8 months ago.

HO Scale. Main Layout 12'x15', extension room is 10'x10' (Just finished the benchwork for it).

Modern Scene/Industry?

I was entering my home town last evening (Waterbury Vermont, which is on the New England Central or former Central Vermont mainline) and my SO yelled TRAIN!

I pulled over, and checked it out.

For those of you who are not in the know, the NEC is replacing most of it's northern mainline with single heavy duty welded rail, a process that's quite fascinating.

What I observed here though, was something that may be of use to modern modelers who are looking for a small scene or industry.

Using plaster laden cheesecloth over cardboard web

I am finally putting in the mountain division on the CCC&StL.

I use the old tried and true method of building a cardboard web and then placing plaster soaked paper towels over the web to create the hard-shell.

I am wondering if using cheesecloth instead of paper towels would work and then give me more of a plaster cloth type substrate that would conform better to my web lattice.

Does anyone have experience using cheesecloth in this manner and if so what are some of the drawbacks?

Thanks

Indy

Layout backlighting

Hello, all,

This is my first post although I've read the blogs and magazine for a couple of years and have learned a ton.  Hope I do this right!

There has been a fair bit of discussion around backlighting and I wanted to post what I have on my simple layout in case it helps anyone else.

I chose to use the RGB flexible led strip lighting as it is reasonably bright but more importantly I can control the color of the light to simulate sunrise, noon, sunset, twilight, etc.  Here is the remote.
