Home Made Conifers Add Realistic Scenes

Hi Jack from Star, Idaho.  A while back in a post I said I had torn out a great deal of my railroad simply because I didn't like it.  Here are a few photos showing some of the rebuilt part and especially home made trees using furnace filter, dowels, and ideas from Joe's DVD's.  I plan to show a lot  more of my layout soon but this will give you an idea that I love the wooded regions of the Pacific Northwest.  So far I have built dozens of the furnace filter trees and I find it rewarding to create different looks in each and every

Prototype HO Signals

I model in HO and I am looking for information to build my own target signals (single light).  Does anyone know what the correct prototype size is for led's (3 mm, 5 mm, etc.) in signals? It appears the size in some of the commercially available ones are too large and do not look like the prototype.

Thanks.

walthers tri state power plant

I was wanting to see if anyone had any pic of the walthers tri state power plant on there layout. I thinking of builing one but would like to see a few done already. thanks for all you help

Put Down the Brush

I had a lot of work planed to today, and I was even doing quite well with it.  But as i was going along, I realized I was making shortcuts and mistakes left and right, and the results were unnecessarily ugly to look at.

Short lines

I didn't know where to post this, so here goes. I have recently taken an interest in short line RR. I would like to model one that feeds into a BN main line ( Using My Hl&B RR)  (Main Line, BN being my fav RR ). Now I have more room to make more benchwork, and lay more track. I was wondering if anyone had any info on short line RR, maybe some photos are them picking up or dropping off cars at a customer. I think this will help me plan the next  track to layout.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Soldering to diecast metal

Has anyone been successful in soldering to a diecast metal engine body.  If so, what is the best way to do it?

Thank you for any insights you can offer.

Caboose or no caboose?

Here's a question that I know will really generate some interesting answers. In the end, I think this will end up as a "unofficial modeling poll".

Backdrop Choices

OK, benchwork is 90% complete and I am soon ready for homosote and a backdrop. I'm looking for ideas for a lightwieght, low cost backdrop surface I can paint sky blue and airbrush clouds while adding cut-out scenery to the surface for depth illusion. Some have suggested luan and others are proponents of thin plywood - but that seems a bit heavy to me. The layout is a point-to-point which covers 20 feet  with a gentle curve to the right after 8 feet.

Help with scratchbuilding a turntable

Hi, I'm new to this site, so I don't know exactly where to even post this question:

I want to scratchbuild a turntable, about mid 1930's or so, USA. It will be in HO, and about 13" in diameter, and I want the bridge to be wood trestle rather than steel plate. I know the ultimate answer is "It depends", but I am trying to get an idea of about HOW DEEP the pit should be. I am hoping maximum about 1 1/2" - about 12-14' in scale (the thickness of a 2x4) -  but I can add to that if needed.
