Unhandlaying Switches

You can find a lot of information on handlaying switches but this may be the first on "un-handlaying" switches.

The W&N gets a paint shop

One of the latest additions to my modeling efforts was the construction of a spray booth for my workshop. When the house was built I included an exterior vent in the workshop wall. The spray booth is approximately 24" wide and about 11 to 18 in tall inside, with about a 12" deep spray area. It has a 10x20 air filter in the back of the spray area. There is a squirrel cage fan with the motor outside the blower housing moving the air.

Middle school model RR: school's out for summer

Classes have ended, we had a nice graduation ceremony for the outgoing eighth graders headed off to high school, I’ve finished end-of-term progress reports and I can finally turn my attention to planning for next year.

Flipping up the Mooers Junction N Scale Railroad

Hopefully the above picture got your attention! Getting to the age where 'going under the layout' is no longer an option I came up with the solution shown below. After removing rolling stock it takes only a few minutes to flip to vertical, that includes roling out the racks stored under the layout. In updates to follow I will post additional photos of details and progress to my N Scale Mooers Junction Railroad.

Stirrups

No matter how careful you are, small plastic stirrups on freight cars seem to just "jump off" and disappear into the model railroad void no matter what kind of super glue you might use. I have figured out that making my own from brass wire is probably the best replacement route but I am not sure of the diameter and the length to use to bend into shape. Does anyone have a handy measurement or rule of thumb to use for making these replacements?

Atlas Track Cleaning Car comes to the Richlawn Railroad

Yes, I know that I can hand vacuum my track on my layout; however, I'm using the excuse that I will have a tunnel that I can't reach with by hand, so.............

I purchased an Atlas track cleaning car and installed a DCC decoder in it.  This is what the chamber looked like after three trips (approximate 40 ft per trip) around the layout.  I'll also use the polishing disks every so often to clean the crud off the rails.

LED Light bulbs (110volt 65 - 100 watt equivalent)

Just finished spending several hours replacing 6 burned out CFLs.

I've been using CFLs since 2007 or so an have 20 of them plus some regular florescent T8 48" tubes.  Over the years every CFL has   been replaced at least once and many two or more times.  I've grown to hate them.

I just replaced some CFLs in the kitchen and we were immediately enamored with the instant on and the overall quality of the bulbs.
