What did you do on your Thanksgiving break?

What did you do on your Thanksgiving break? I finished my staging yard.

A Fictional History - Part II / The Early Days of the Arizona Pacific, 1887 - 1918

I hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving, I spent much of mine in a self-induced, tryptophan slumber, dreaming about our future pike!

The following is the second installment of my history for our two fictional railroads, the White Water Western, and the Arizona Pacific. Last time, we looked at the origin of the Triple W through the last decade of the nineteenth century. What follows is the establishment and early history of the Arizona Pacific, and a brief look at both lines as the United States entered The Great War:

The hobby and I lost a friend - Gary Gelzer of the GNC Railway

Model railroading has lost a friend and so have I. Gary Gelzer was well known to many OpSig folks for his attendance at operating weekends throughout the country, his articles in the Dispatcher's Office and his multiple versions of the Great Nothwetern Coastline Railway and Navigation Company (GNC).

Maintaining Momentum

So, looking back at my previous posts I see that the last major construction push on my layout was back in February of this year when I completed laying and wiring my track-work.  That was ten months ago. Progress has been terribly slow.

An Unfairy tale

(This is a reprint of an article from my late Richlawn Railroad website)

An Unfairy Tale
This is a fairy tale – or you could say and “Unfairy” tale for your amusement.

Once upon a time there was a model railroader called Mr. Boxcar. Now Mr. Boxcar was very active in the hobby, known by many modelers, and an official with the International Model Railroad Organization (IMRO). Now Mr. Boxcar was working on his accreditation as a Model Railroad Master (MRM) by going through the Acquirement Program (AP).

My misadventures in building my Fort Worth layout.

Well I figured I'm far enough along now that i should just start my own blog. To start with, I'm a newbie. this will be my first real layout. I had started building a 4' X 8' layout with no real direction or help and soon found myself in way over my head. Then a buddy showed me this site and I've learned a lot. So thanks to all who have helped me, even if you didn't know you were helping.

Scenery update on the WP&GNMRR

Its been a while since I posted anything about my layout (The Western Pacific & Great Northern Model Railroad) so I thought it was time for an update. We have just had our house repaired from earthquake damage that we sustained from all the earthquakes that we have had here in Christchurch, New Zealand. After moving back into our (almost) new home it took me a few weeks to sort out the garage (train room) so that I could get back into it and carry on with the layout.

Layout Statistics

Being somewhat of math geek, and not seeing a recent survey of how model railroaders break down by scale, era and method of control, I did one.  This is by no means a scientific study, but does reinforce general conceptions about the hobby most of us have.  I surveyed 163 layouts published in the 2010, 2011, and 2012 volumes of Model Railroader (and it's associated annuals Great Model Railroads and Model Railroad Planning), Railroad Model Craftsman, and Model Railroad Hobbyist.
