A Bit of Rumination on Free-lancing, and a Caboose Design Idea!
While I never expected so many people to read my last Blog entry, let alone respond to it, I thought I'd open this entry with a hearty 'THANK YOU' to everyone in the MRH universe. I now have much to consider with respect to our humble little rail empire.
0-4-0 Switcher Detailing - First Attempt (Addendum 2)
For those of you who saw the birth of this "economy" switcher a few weeks ago - here it is at work.
The next thing to work on is my photography skills - new camera - no clue !
Isn't this hobby great - endless horizons, always something new to learn
MRH 120-day Challenge: Why I Model Northern Ontario
I'm always too optimistic. As feared, a bunch of Real Life happened for the past two months, and I've made no progress beyond tweaking the benchwork and lighting a bit. But it wasn't all down time as far as railroading is concerned: we took a three week camping trip around northern Ontario, ending in Cochrane for the Ontario Northland Railway Historical & Technical Society Convention.
On the way, we spent most of a week at Neys Provincial Park, on the beautiful Lake Superior north shore -- and right by the Canadian Pacific mainline:
Richlawn Railroad - "Gone, but not forgotten"
When referring to the Louisville & Nashville Railroad I often see the saying "Gone, but not forgotten" And so it is with the Richlawn Railroad as today after three days of work all of the railroad has been removed and is piled out back of my house. Next up will be removing the glass above the door and removing all of the lettering before securing it back in place, painting, and patching the floor. Happy Labor Day!
Maine Narrow Gauge Steam Video
This weekend the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad in Portland is running their Steam Locomotive. Today I went to see it and shot this video. This is a 2 foot Narrow Gauge Railroad. It only runs on a couple of miles of track but it is pretty interesting. They also have a nice museum as well as several pieces of equipment outside which include Freight Cars and passenger cars. Here's a link to My You Tube video..
Buildings arrive on the Gila Springs & Mesquite
The La Grange engine service tracks and caboose track are starting to get some use.

Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad: Barnesville
I'm deep into landscaping the Barnesville peninsula.
Operating Switch Stands
I've read and re-read Woflgang's great article in the Jan-Feb 2010 MRH on operating switch stands. I really like the idea, and I wanted to see if I could get it to work with my Fast Tracks turnouts.
Instead of brass plate, I simply bent the rod, and inserted it into a hole on the throwbar. For just testing purposes, I mounted the stand sideways.
And here's the results.
