Getting Started in 3D printing: Part 1.

Now that I'm getting back into the hobby, digitally at least, one of the big things I wanted to dive into was 3D printing.  It seems like a great technology that has finally evolved to the point that people can start using it en masse.  Personally, I think that 3D printing lends itself well to small parts that are difficult to make at the work bench and one-off models that model train manufacturers can't make a profit on.  While there is certainly a lot to discuss in regards to additive manufacturing, I'm going to eschew the default "How to" series of po

Freeelanced wood water tower

After becoming the proud happy owner of 18 feet of yard modules, I realized I have a number of buildings I am going to need to build.   The group I am with is modeling 1923 steam operations in southern Ohio.   I can go into that more in another post.   This set of updates is to document my adventure in building a water tower.

To start, I found a kit from Suncoast Models - No 3010 and a set of plans from Model Railroader for 1870s water tank ( published 2015)

Is (prototype) Model Railroading Fun?

Ever since I picked up my first issue of Model Railroader (January, 1983), the motto "Model Railroading is Fun!" has been emblazoned somewhere at the top of the front cover. Model railroading is "The World's Greatest Hobby" (another motto) - and for good reason: Arguably no other hobby offers as diverse a range of opportunities to learn & practice different skills. From engineering/planning, to carpentry, electrical work & electronics, painting, sculpture, and of course modeling, model railroading really has it all.

Looking for suggestions!

This is my first attempt at designing a control panel. Looking for feedback on design, layout and functionality.

SCL =Standard Car Length.

The printed card will be covered with plexiglass. The mainline crossover turnouts (1 & 6) will be wired to a single switch to throw both turnouts together.

Making a house a home...Or the honey do list from heck!!!

Just catching up....still settling in to my new home, and making repairs and improvements.   House was vacant for a couple years and has some issues, but nothing serious.

On a happy note , I managed to get the hard drive on my old computer and saved about everything!  New back up hard drive is coming soon.

The garage measures about 11 x 28 and has no windows.  May be the home of whatever I try to build, exploring options. For right now, I'm thinking TOMA and starting small.

COMPLETED -CN Covipan Intermodal Yard

Here are a few photos and article of the completed Intermodal Yard on my layout, the Trenton Subdivision in N Scale. More below.

Kettle Falls Branch - start

This blog will document the layout in my garage...

My hope is this turns into a prototypical based model inspired by a Burlington Northern Branch Line in Eastern Washington. The Burlington Northern line extended north from Spokane Wa / Hillyard to Kettle Falls Wa and beyond into Canada. The model will be HO scale (~1:87) in a 21x18 foot garage with significant other constrains. Target era is the early 70s.

Expect slow and irregular progress.

Thanks for reading, more to come...
