Epic keepalive failure
Just in case somebody else thinks about adding a diy keepalive to a loco, please take note of how catastrophically bad things can get:
Note to self, google for "parallel tantalum capacitors", hit I'm Feeling Lucky, read on...
Live Catenary
Do any of you model live overhead catenary? I stumbled upon Mr Smith's videos on youtube by chance and after doing a back search here on MRH found this blog:

If I had an old Rivarossi GG1...that I do....how/can I convert it to overhead power?

More mainline signals...
So moving right along with the final installs of signals yesterday I installed a triple head mast to the mainline protecting the diamond at Carlislie Junction.
Onboard DCC actuator solutions
I'd like to explore options for onboard (inside the locomotive) DCC controlled actuators. There are a number of commercial solutions for accessory actuators that are stationary - such as controlling turnouts. However, there doesn't seem to be many options for onboard that are small enough to fit inside an HO switcher.
Finding small actuators doesn't seem too difficult. I've found and acquired the following:
Decoders for a Newb
So I am going from DC to DCC. I am looking for clarification:
- $30 decoders dont do sound?
- you can buy speakers and add to the above decoder to get sound?
- You have to buy a $100 decoder that has a speaker attached?
A little about my HO scale locos:
- Bowser DCC Ready GE U25B
- Proto 200 DC Alco S9
I plan on buying the Digitrax Zephyr with LNWI to use my smartphone as a throllte if that helps answer the questions

Preferred brands for hidden & staging track?
Hello:
I'm fiddling with Anyrail, fantasizing about a greater day with the basement of my dreams. I was wondering what brand/model/etc. of track you all prefer/recommend for hidden trackage? This would include brand/model for mainline track, turnouts (DCC-friendly!), staging, etc.
I'll be using Micro-Engineering, hand-lay, and all kinds of other delicate stuff in plain sight. For the out-of-sight trackage, it just needs to be reliable.
Thanks!
