Operations
Rule books
Hi gang,
first post for me so be gentle! I was wondering if anyone has a good comprehensive rule book for model train ops. I may be in over my head but I am curious. The best I could find was prototype info which is way too complicated for my small operation. Any help will be appreciated.

railroad energy efficiency
Here is an interesting little article on the advances made in energy efficiency by the railroads.

Regarding mpg for trains, there was an answer posted by engineer Al Krug on his website regarding that. 15,000 tons of coal being hauled up a 1½% grade by 6 SD-40's is about 48 feet per gallon of diesel.
Operating at Scale Speeds
I have noticed in some videos that scale speeds are sometimes not observed in operating sessions, especially in the yards. Seems to me that not operating at scale speeds make the train movements look toy like.
What is the common operating practice - observe scale speeds or not? If they are not observed what is the reason?
Your input is appreciated.
22 Stories Up - Decision Point (1)
A continuation to the story following my progress of the Central Vermont RR's Barre Branch layout's construction.
This topic represents a major decision point in the construction due to an unexpected consideration.
The idea is to work up each module individually, putting down the roadbed, track, wiring, and turnout controls while the module rests in an easily workable state, and than join it to the next one once that is completed.
Friday Fun Videos
I am posting a "Fun" video. Per Joe's sujestion I purchased Sony Vegas Platinum editor. It is a GREAT program. I made this video to try and learn the functions of the program. It has a pretty good learning curve.(Thanks to you tube videos for help in making the movie) I have had a fun time doing it. The video is in the name of fun only. There were no Mac or Jonsey that I know off.
Hope you enjoy it.
Richfield RailRunners
Hello All, Our 5th week of work and we ave about a 3rd of the layout up. Last week we built a 3 turn helix using spline roadbed. It looks GREAT and the trains move up and down perfectly. This week we are going to put electrical drops in and continue laying track.
Adding cars for the first time.
I now have all my track down, all of the switch machines in and tested, but I have no cars at any of my 16 visible industries. So how do I select the cars, the waybills and determine what trains go where. I have read just enough to convince me I do not know how to start. Here is my trackplan with information about each industry.
The JPG is not as sharp as I would like it. I printed the image and it is much more legible.
Easy Model Railroad Inventory Upgrade
A new version of Easy Model Railroad Inventory has been released. I believe this release has a number of additions that have been requested.
Getting closer to operations
Unless the sky falls I'm about 3 months away from being able to do operations on the Richlawn Railroad for the very first time. I'll have probably enough area / switching to engage three operators. I've belonged to an operating group (North Country Interchange Operating Group - NCIOG) for about a year and we're all either in the building stage or in my case have an operating railroad, but no switching opportunities. One of the guys in our group (of 7 guys) has an awesome layout and is also working on trying to do operations.
CAR ROUTING CARD SYSTEM - Apple IPad & Itouch?
Is anyway aware of a car routing card system APP for an Iphone, Itouch or IPad? I think that would be very useful. If so, information would be appricated.
