Modifying figures

The Greater Nickel Plate is at the point where I am working on small details. One of the problems I am encountering is the lack of people with appropriate gestures etc. I note many photos of scenes here and wonder "where did they get that figure?" Searching catalogs and websites produces mainy "standard" people in positions that are close, but no cigar.

Modeling D&RGW HOn3 Downunder

Hi all,

I'm new to MRH forums, but figured I'd try getting some help here

Home brew photo etch?

Has anyone on this forum had any success,or failure doing their own photo etching? I'm thinking about experimenting with this process as my wife just bought a UV light for her nail polish...

I'm thinking about an easy project like making my own roof walks and end platforms in 1/29 scale.

This video is what got me thinking about it.

Weathered cars on the Hitop

After not posting in quite awhile, as I've been busy with family and recuperating from a work injury, here are some weathered cars I have done for use on the Hitop. Some of my work I have sold on EBay the past few months, and just sold the Chessie box shown below to a good friend in Ohio. The PRR car I just finished, after two weeks, and four types of weathering medium on the car. I recently started to weather cars on the side for either sale on EBay, or sale to friends. I eventually would like to do custom work for modelers to enjoy.

Chipping fluid vs. Hairspray?

After reading a lot of different forum posts here and on other forums about the "chipping" method of weathering I'm curious if anyone on this forum has experience using any of the commercial products vs using hairspray. I know of two companies that make a "chipping solution" (Ak Interactive and Vallejo).

To me $5 or 6 for a 2 oz or so bottle of chipping fluid seems a bit high, when I can buy hairspray for about the same price and get more volume.

However, I'm willing to spend the money if someone can convince me that using these commercial products will be better than hairspray.

How do you remove the shell from a Rivarossi Krauss Maffei?

I recently acquired the Rio Grande version of Rivarossi's Krauss Maffei diesel -- a powered unit and a dummy.  The motor in the powered unit needs to be cleaned and lubricated.  I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the shell.  It may simply pop off, but I'm afraid to force it and break something.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Old style phones

The time is fast approaching to begin minimal operations on my layout.  But before I can do that I need a way of communicating between the dispatcher and the yard operators and cabin (tower) operators and such.

This means I need a telephone system,  As such I have done a bit of research on the net and the info is hard to find, and tends to disagree with each other.  And finding the actual hardware seams even harder.  That being said any advice would be a help.

TOMA Ideas in practice

I have been wanting to explore what can be done with 48" sections - module style without fixed end connections - or The One Module Approach or TOMA.

Now that I have actually started to create sawdust it is clear that some more forethought would have been benifitial. Not too late though as this is a chainsaw. Some of my concerns may be no big deal but I thought I'd post them here for your imput.

How to Update Photos

I'm not happy with the quality of some photos I posted recently.  If I upload better photos using the same server name will they be used instead of the old ones?  Is the link between post and photo purely by name or is there some internal linkage?

Should I delete the old photo from the server before uploading a replacement?  Or will it overwrite automatically?

Also, how does one set the "Updated" flag on a post?

Inspection rail car

Has anyone built one of these yet? If so, what did you use for the base model?
