Painting under frames

I have several Accurail boxcars that I am planning to assemble (L&N, Monon). My question is; I like to paint the weights and under frames before assembling. To be prototypical, what color should I paint them (black, rust, etc.)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Layout update

After being ether snowed in or not working much I have had a chance to do a little more work on the BOF building on the layout. I color coted the piping and did a little weathering. I added safety striping around the building also. I still like to find warning sign that are used in steel mills and add them along with lighting. As always I'm open to suggestions.

Motor chatter-solution?

Hi!  I just updated my Athern SW7 (blue box) with a TCS decoder.  The switcher runs smoothly running forward, but in reverse there is significant low speed motor chatter and vibration.  The chatter and vibration are in direct relation to motor speed.  What did I do wrong?  Any thoughts on a fix?

Thanks, CNJ Mike

Backbone Helix questions

I am going to be building my helix this weekend and looking for suggestions on how best to form the backbone of the helix.  I saw the references in MRR annual books for a backbone style helix and even found one reference to one online (http://maparr1943.blogspot.com/) but I haven't found how people go about bending the masonite/hardboard into the radius required for the backbone or how they go about securing it at the bottom/top to hold it into the right shape.

So, what do people suggest?

Recasting a still in production model is Theft but do we tolerate it in Model Railroading? If so Why?

I have seen a few low life model railroaders now recast others work.   This is just out right theft of peoples works and then post that they do recast like it is some new found art form.  I know a few people that do 3D design and printing or casting of models that they build and design for Cars, Trucks, Hopper Loads etc. etc.. Then some Dirt ball low life thief comes out and recast that 3D model in resin and use the molds to make Train Cars, Autos and locomotive parts of the original 3D product or casting.

HO Scale Skylights

Good evening to all. A quick question to see if anyone would have an idea where I could get HO scale skylights for a warehouse? I would even build them if need be.

Thanks

Wierd but true!

I have read about unusual layouts before. I have a normal layout I think. However, I have an unusual story about what I did. In the late 70's or early 80's I set up a very small loop of N scale snap track on a work counter and ran a short train for a day. Not too unusual except that I was serving in the U S Navy. The kicker is that I was on a nuclear submarine the USS Baton Rouge SSN 689. We were on a very deep dive at the time. I would clarify that I couldn't put the cars or locomotive on the track until we had leveled to a zero bubble. This was in Sonar where I stood watch.

Copying some Obscure and Unheard of railroad...Freelancing?

This might be an old document file.  (1996 give or take a few years).  From the http://www.GSMrr.org/ website. So would it be Freelancing to copy a railroad that has little to no information about it from route to motive power etc. or just make up a history to fill in the huge gaps left from no documentation to failure of the railroad to mergers etc.  Makes you wonder when you cross over from Prototype fidelity to Freelancing?

Wooden trestle

I have milled jigs from styrene to built wooden trestles in HOn3. With these jigs, it's easy to built even large trestles. Here are a few pictures:

A Question of Scale

I know that HOn30 and HOn3 are two different scales and that they both run on 9mm track (Nscale).  My question is ... what is the difference between the two scales?  Is one bigger than the other?

Thanks for any info.
