Milwaukee- Athearn's new U50

Hi all,

Did any one who went to Milwaukee take a pic of Athearn's proposed U50 ? Since this is my "just to be started on" next project,it would be great to be able to start something else if they are going to produce one soon.

Thanks, Pete.

Scrap Cans

While looking through my photo's for Gondola Scrap loads I found these two taken from Pepper Ave, at Colton, CA. They show two gondolas loaded with tin cans. I think they would make an excellent load but I can't figure out how to make them in HO. Any ideas. Perhaps someone has already done it.

Load for ExactRail Gunderson Gondola

ExactRail Southern Pacific 2420 Cu. Ft. Gondola.

These cars were buily in 1965 by Gunderson Brothers and given the SP class 100-7. They were in the number series 333500 - 334655. In 1985 65 of the cars recieved a re-build and were numbered 800000 - 800064. ExactRail have just released a re-run of this car in the 800000 number series. See this web site for photo's and details.

Blast Furnace Operations

I'm installing the Wather's furnace and have read up on the process to use lime, coke and ore.   But the process also requires oxygen.   What is the source of the oxygen?  Is it produced at the plant or shipped in?   If shipped in, what format - compressed air, liquid?   What types of cars would be used?   My era is 1952 and I have been told that there were few tank type cars then but box cars fitted with internal tanks for shipping were used.   Is this the purpose of the tanks and piping on the kit?

Decal Paper Experience ???

Hey gang,

I am looking for anyone who has experience with DecalPaper.com? What I would like to know is if their paper is any good? There are few reviews that I can find for the product. The company's return policy is non-existent so I really am hesitating.

What other brands of decal paper has anyone used? I have a color laser, so I need laser capable paper.

Thanks,

Kirk

There's a prototype for it

I pass these photos along just to show that there's a prototype for the performance of my first trackwork way back when.

6/24/10 - UP's LOFxx was shoving a string of empties, when a boxcar picked the points of a yard track switch.  So, the west truck took track 3 and the east truck took track 2.

CAD? Software for designing laser cut kits

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for good software (free is better) that I could use to produce .psp files which I could hand to a local laser cutter.  I just want to do this for myself, not make kits for sale.  I am very bad at cutting out parts for scratch building, but have had good luck assembling laser kits... so I would like to make some of my own design.

Anyone else already doing this?  What are you using?  What tips can you offer?

I Told Ya So

I told these guys in a video awhile back, that I wouldn't allow those engines to pull another freight train, and so far, they haven't, in fact, I now have five, thats right, five streamline passenger cars to pull behind them, I didn't feel like pulling out some heavyweight headend cars, so am just running the streamliners.

Advice needed on spraying Scalecoat II - I'm getting a slight grain effect vs a mirror finish

I have a brass Whitcomb 44 tonner that I want to finish in the as delivered Rock Island scheme of red and black.  I bought fresh bottles of Scalecoat II caboose red and black with Scalecoat II thinner this weekend and sprayed the red last night.  Rather than getting a mirror finish for decalling I'm seeing a slight grainy effect in the finish.  Used 30 PSI and thinned the paint around 20% paint and 80% thinner.  Any suggestions - more paint and less thinner, reduce the PSI?

Research: The Modern Era combined with Now You see it, Now you Don't!

I just had a rather sobering moment.

One of my favorite industires in Arizona railroading is the cottonseed mill.  The Cotton idustry is primarily interested in the cotton ball fiber, even though each ball also contains seeds.  As a result, the cotton gin is used to separate the valuable fibers form the unwanted seeds.  The seeds were then at one point regarded waste.
