Resin freight car kit builds - 2014

For those of you who are thinking of building a resin freight car kit, I've posted summaries of a couple of recent builds on my blog. These are HO scale kits but many build techniques can be used in other scales.

Safety First on the Trenton Subdivision in N Scale

All railroads strive to reduce accidents and injuries, so reflecting this mandate on my layout is an opportunity to create a small diorama within the layout.

Super Saw (an idea based on a store clerk's lack of knowledge)

The frustrating part of my day...

Earlier this evening I called a local, (Canadian) national, hardware store with with what I thought was very a simple question.  "Could you, please, check the X-acto cabinet for me and tell me if you have any #215 saw blades."

Static Grass

I built one of the static grass applicators using a Harbor Freight bug zapper as explained in MRH. The electrical charge is going through because I got "zapped" but the Kibri grass I am using won't stand up. My question, "Is the static grass used by the Noch and other static charge devices made of a material specific to this application?"

I'm wondering if the Kibri grass I am using, which is 25+ years old, is made of a non-static material.

Storm Drains That Can Be Placed Anywhere.

"I think I can see my keys."  Adding a storm drain can create a scenario of it's own.

Storm drains and heavy rain runoff is something that we don't need to worry about on our layouts.  The real world is not so fortunate.  So having drainage modeled into our layouts is something we need to consider.

needing help with scenery...

Hey guys I'm pretty much new I've ben buying trains for a very long time but I'm just now doing my first layout...... and I'm building an around the room layout. Nothing major just a double main around the room. The back track however is elevated, well I didn't think of it at the time I wasn't thinking of doing scenery so I didn't make My shelf wide enough for what I wanted so my shelf is only 5 inches wide. So from the back track to the first which is the outside is almost straight down.

best compressor for an airbrush

I am looking to replace my noisy air compressor for my airbrush. I thought I would ask for some advice.

I am looking for a quiet compressor, one with a tank. My budget is around $100.

More Z Scale stuff

Wanting to get my skills into something small, I built a modified version of the famous NOCH 85880 Cortina layout in Z-Scale.

Since I primarily model in HO and did not want to invest getting into Z-Scale, I  acquired a lot of Marklin stuff in a barter deal from my friend, who was getting out of Marklin, for whom I design a lot of model railroad electronics and automation.

HO or N Scale billboard lights and bulk heads

I had a whole lot of IHC Signal target faces, since I make my own signals, instead of spending a fortune to but signals, so I put the excess target faces to some good use to make N-Scale or even suitable for HO scale billboard or flood lights.

Simply cut the target face to  a 1/4" square (HO) or 0.2" square (N) preserving the hood of the target, because this is what creates the appeal.
