Free-lancing in a Prototype World

Planning a layout has always held a certain fascination for me. A number of years ago, I planned an N-scale layout to fill a 12’ x 24’ room. It won a regional NMRA contest, but I never found time to build it. Later, when I helped found an N-Trak, turned permanent, turned N-Trak club, I planned and built several modules and helped with the inception of the permanent layout. Then I drifted from the model railroad world for some thirteen years.

Happy Birthday to me! I have a wonderful wife!

My beautiful, wonderful, amazing wife has outdone herself again.  Today is my birthday, and her gift to me this year is the brand new Southern Ry. combination depot kit from Nick & Nora Designs.  In fact, it may be the very first one they sold, since she called and special ordered it before it was available on their web site.

NKP 765 Footnotes

Before returning home last Monday, the Fort Wayne Historical Society's NKP 765 was in the Enola Yard near Harrisburg for a series of NS Employee Appreciation Day excursions. Several trips across the famous Rockville Bridge and into the Harrisburg Amtrak station brought about several "incidents."

On the first day of excursions, a number of rear end "fender benders" were reported  - - according to officials, some motorists were startled by something they had never seen before and weren't paying full attention to their driving.

Steam on the Horshoe Curve! Posted by a friend, this was reportedly, the first time in nearly 40 years that steam under its own power negotiated this famous landmark. I was there and witnessed its journey back home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiV1hb4PYGA&feature=share&list=ULSiV1hb4PYGA

And I thought N scale was making me nuts with small parts!!

I was bored late last night so I decided to put together one of my new Accurail 55 ton hoppers. Not too complicated and would be a little relaxation before bed. Or so I thought......

8-17-12: Home is Where The Model Railroad is...

My decision to build a model railroad with my two sons had been forming for a while. We reside in a three-bedroom home with no basement or den. Built in 1951, the mud adobe house was designed with rooms that are ‘cozy’ to say the least. I had considered turning the smaller bedroom into a trainroom, but realized that the boys, who currently bunk together, will soon want rooms to themselves. This is only natural.

And one step backwards

Last week was an educational one -- unpacked a couple of cars from my Canadian and ran them around the track. These are long passenger cars with a lot of fittings underneath and diaphragms -- quite unlike the doddlebug passenger car and old heavyweight that I have been using for track testing. As I expected, found a bunch of problems on the upper level -- one somewhat expected and a couple that were not. The expected problem was really an assembly issue -- built a section of bridge track and the ends stuck up just enough to drag on the underside of the car.

'46 Flatbed

One of the things I brought back this summer was a 1946 Chevy Flatbed (HO). I wanted a truck this size, mostly for the lumberyard scene I have planned.

Right from the box, it's a great model (the mirrors are not mounted), but totally plastic and shiny, and the bed's a problem.

and with cab removed.

Latest purchases ( I'm stoked!)

Funds have been really tight for my family as of late and back a few months ago when I decided on a scale change from N to HO, it probably wasn't the smartest decision as far as hobby finances. It had to be done though. As much as I've always loved N scale, my nerves were getting to the point where I just could not handle dealing with couplers and small detail parts anymore.
