Tools, tips and tricks
Twirled Trees / Centri"frugal" Conifers
My drill-spun, floral-wire & ground foam pines are anything but groundbreaking (I even use a T-pin in the foam for planting), but I thought I'd share my "pining away" process anyway.
I'd like to see them make:
I expect other people also have lists in their minds of "things I wish someone would make." Mine includes the following:
- Face decals. Painting faces of figures is tedious and, for me, hopelessly inaccurate. Sticking a decal on it would be much simpler.
- Hands, perhaps etched in brass so they can be folded. Many otherwise-useful figures have poorly molded boxing-glove hands spoiling their appearance.
I'm sure I'll think of more as my brain awakens. Who else has ideas?
Happy railroading!

Mt. Coffin & Columbia River - 23"x41" n-scale layout
Been working (slowly) on a 23"x41" n-scale layout based on the cannery industry along the Columbia River (Oregon) in the early 1900s.
Thought I'd share some construction picts since its start at the beginning of the year.

Easy Model Railroad Inventory Development Progress
Version 4.0 is being worked with a release expected about the end of the summer. I have added an Owner field to the rolling stock and locomotive records. One of my beta testers has his stuff and his wife has hers. It occurred to me that clubs might be able to better use Easy Model Railroad Inventory.
Improving depth of field in my modelling photography
Following a discussion on photography and depth of field I downloaded a 4-week trial of some computer software called Helicon focus
http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfocus.html
Simply put, the software takes a number of partially-focused photos and layers them on top of one another to produce a single perfectly focused shot.
Layout backlighting
Hello, all,
This is my first post although I've read the blogs and magazine for a couple of years and have learned a ton. Hope I do this right!
There has been a fair bit of discussion around backlighting and I wanted to post what I have on my simple layout in case it helps anyone else.
I chose to use the RGB flexible led strip lighting as it is reasonably bright but more importantly I can control the color of the light to simulate sunrise, noon, sunset, twilight, etc. Here is the remote.
Easy Model Railroad Inventory How to Design a Complicated Query
I had completed my timetable and was selecting the cars for each train. Selecting the cars is simple.
Click the Add button to the right of the Assigned Cars tab to view a list of all of the cars that fit the requirements.
Before a car will be displayed for selection it must meet very specific criteria.
1. Service type not a locomotive,
2. The car cannot be assigned to another train,
Floquil Marker pens
Hi Jack from Star, Idaho. I have a question about the Floquil Marker Pens in the track colors. I use the Atlas code 83 track and is there some prep that has to be done to the track before the paint will adhere to the rail when I use the rust color for weathering? When I apply it I really cannot see that there is any change in the rail color. What am I doing wrong?
HOW-TO: SUPER Easy Backdrop Holders !!
SUPER Easy Backdrop Holders
I may have just hit upon the easiest way to secure hardboard backdrops *ever* ...
Static grass applicator. Yet another design.
I have wanted to have one of these static grass applicators for a while now and I must have googled everything there is to read about them.
When I finally got to action I choose the easiest way, the flyswatter/tea strainer version. I shorted the bleeding resistor and tried both with and without bypassed filter capacitor. But I was not happy with the result. The flock just fell down. I noticed that there was some kind of static field as the majority of fibers stood up. But not nearly enough to be a good result.
