Train Holiday

I've recently returned from holiday. What on earth does that have to do with a (model) train related forum? Well, as the trip was centered in part on an across Africa train trip,  thought folks might have some interest!

I hate benchwork!

I didn't always mind it so much. Over the years though, as I've built more and more layouts, I've come to despise it. I've tried all different types, including some of the varieties with two inch foam, but if I had to pick a so called favorite it would be L-girder with plywood sub roadbed which is what the new one is.

Focus stacking - you've got to try this!

Gentlemen & Ladies,

I've read with much interest the process of "stacking" pictures of the same scene at different focus setting using software to achieve better depth of field.  Charlie Comstock has an excellent presentation on this on this MRH site and recently shared more of his wonderful pictures shot outdoors and edited using stacking software - in his case (and mine) by Helicon Focus. http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfocus.html

Free-moN Staging Yard - 16"x10'

It was showtime at the Hiller.

Silicon Valley Free-moN had our modules set up and trains running only to find...

ONLY ONE PASSING SIDING ON THE WHOLE LAYOUT????

We had over a week of show and the ability to run only two trains at a time?

What would happen next Sunday when the whole group showed up and wanted to run trains?
Draw straws?
Stand in line?

Something had to be done!

So I built (most of) a staging yard in (most of) a week.

A short progress report

Well, it's been a while since my last update. I have been distracted by work for the last little while but things are calming down again.

I have spent what little free time I have converting two engines to DCC and learning (playing with) my NCE system. After converting my Kato C44-9W (a simple drop-in replacement), I decided to convert my Altas GP35.

This was not a drop-in replacement and also required some machining of the frame to make the decoder fit. Fortunately, my handy Dremel tool took care of that. In all, it took about an hour to convert.

Things I wished I had appreciated/known

Things have been moving slowly on the BQR due to lost time removing failed solutions and correcting them. The largest screwup has been around the special order Atlas low profile under layout turnout motors -- it looked like a real solution for the low clearance between the main and upper deck. Problem is that when I go the installed and wired up the stem flexed so much that the throwbar never moved, but the linkage rotated freely, twisting around the skinny shank. Useless! Atlas support said 'gee, do they do that? Send us one and we will look at it...
