Helpful Hints for Getting Started Building your first Model Railroad

Hello Everybody My name is Dan Kelley AKA: Rio Grande Dan here on the MRH forums.

I'm a member of the MRH Spam Police and spend 40 to 60 hrs a week reading through the many Posts and Blogs here on the MRH forums. While reading I keep seeing one problem that many new Model Railroaders are having and that is "WHERE & HOW DO I START?"

CITY OF INDUSTRY LAYOUT Project 02-12

Here is my second project, and it is a departure from my previous plan to begin design on the MP/TP operations in New Orleans, namely the Race St. Yard, and Annunciation St. Passenger Terminal, with some of the surrounding industry which the railroad served, i am still in the very rough planning stage for it still gathering information and maps and photographs of the area for the time period during the war and just afterward, pre-NOUPT era.

Minimum Friction Contacts

As I talked about in my thread on motorizing the Atheran crane thread that I had an idea of making a truck with less friction in the pick up wipers. I came up with the idea of using a tiny ball bearing race on the axle of the trucks. I'm using a set of Intermoutain 33" dia. wheels as an experiment. No electrical connection since both wheels are insulated. The axle is brass plated with a blackening. I just want to test this theory out to see if it will work. I'm going to use pieces of .006" thick phosphor bronze sheet cut into a narrow strip.

capacitors

is it possible to use a capacitor on DC locomotives to keep them running over "dead" spots?

-just curious because I have a lifetime and a half supply of capacitors in various sizes that i could use

                                            Thanks in advance

Does anyone have experiance with TAT (True Action Throttle)??

I would like to know if it is possible to set the TAT brake with a light throttle and increase the brake setting or adjust the throttle setting to make a precise stop.  This is the way the 12 inch scale trains were operated to control slack action.

The reason I am interested is that none of the DCC decoders can do this.  The brake will not work if the throttle is open, or opening the throttle cancels the brake setting.
