Atlas Genset Decoder Killer
Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and have a problem/question. I have an HO Atlas Trainman NRE Genset locomotive that is a decoder killer! It was running nicely for several years on my NCE layout, until one day it suddenly went into reverse by itself and stopped dead. I replaced the decoder and put it back on the layout, it ran for a bit, suddenly reversed itself and died again. My Decoder Tester says both decoders are now DOA. I don't see any obvious shorts in the loco wiring. Any ideas what went wrong? Thanks. -Bill

So my buddy left me a canon vixia hrf 800 video camera and a tripod and a bag of stuff? Oh, and a quick start guide. Just enough to make me to turn a few more grey hairs to silver.

ESU Cab Control First Day Issues? Please Help!
I hate to do this with such a new system which I honestly still feel is going to brake new ground in this hobby. My first days experience was not good. After eagerly awaiting its arrival and waiting to charge the throttle I could not get the system to work.

Re-Decodering a Bachmann Steamer
After a month of operating sessions and doing a bit of scenery, I decided to get back into my left brain and attempt a steam decoder install. Actually, it's a REinstall where I removed all the electronics in a Bachmann steam loco and replaced them with a new Loksound decoder and iPhone speaker. It ended up nice, but the process wasn't without its pitfalls (let's just say that not all manufacturers follow the NMRA standard on wire color...). Details to follow . . .

Shorts on layout are confusing
I have this "N" scale layout that is giving me fits with shorts that should not be happening and looking for ideas for the cause of the shorts. Attached is a diagram of my layout. I use the NCE PowerCab DCC system.
All turnouts Atlas #7 with 5-Tortoise and 7-Hoffmann switch machines.
All the turnouts and switch machines work fine except #'s 8, 11 & 12. When I run a loco it always stops at any one of the three turnouts regardless of the way the turnouts are set. Any thoughts on why this would be? None of the other turnouts do this.

Now that I have gone over most of the build for my layout up to present day (I will take pics of the newest table with the mountains and rock faces in place and post them soon), I thought I would show some of the details I have been working on like tunnel portals, bridges and structures. Since I didn't take any before pics of the portals or bridges before I painted/weathered them, I found pics online of what they look like out of the box.

JMRI on a Raspberry Pi
I have finalized my DCC system. As previously mentioned I have built a DCC++ Base Station per the instructions found on the DCC++ YouTube site and other resources on the web. On my blog I have lots of links and how to’s for that. To run DCC++ you either have to use the software that was developed for it or use JMRI. I chose JMRI. Instead of running it on my lap top I wanted a dedicated computer for it so I invested in a Raspberry Pi. A Pi, is a very small credit card sized board designed to run a version of Linux. No worries, no Linux knowledge is needed.

MERG DCC Booster
I finally got around to building my MERG booster. The booster is a kit available from MERG. merg.org.uk You need to be a member to buy their kits but it is well worth the price for the information available to you and the other kits they have in their kit locker.
Decoder installations
I have had several false starts at doing this. I opened up some loco's to see what I had to deal with and sort of lost interest. Mostly I lose interest as I am not certain of what I am doing and watching video's and reading the manuals doesn't seem to answer all my questions. I have a couple of Lok pilot decoders I just received. Those should be simple as I wont be changing the installed light boards.

After fixing my problem with getting my locos up a 2% + grade (it was never consistent for the entire run) I then saw another aspect of my original plan that I never really loved. At that point I had my loco run up hill about 4 inches over the course of 8-10 feet or so but coming back down hill was done inside another tunnel on the opposite end of the layout in about 3 feet. Needless to say it was a steep hill downward though a few tests showed that locos would not fly off the track or even move that much faster so it was doable but I didn't love it.
